. The expression "overcomers" suggests the participation in a battle, in which a victory is gained. To which overcomers and to what battle are we referring? We are, of course, speaking about a spiritual context and refer to the battle of the faith. Paul exhorts Timothy, in his first epistle, to fight "the good fight of the faith" (6:12). Then, when finishing the second epistle, Paul himself gives testimony of having "fought the good fight" and of having overcome (4:7-8). Elsewhere he says "I therefore so run, as not uncertainly; so fight I, as not beating the air but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage..." The Christian life can be lived as a battle, or as a mere gentle stroll. Whoever opts for the latter, without doubt will be able a witness to God's mercy, but at the end of their days will not be able to say "I have fought the good fight". God needs men and women who live the Christian life in such a way that they can be declared overcomers. For that reason, according to what Revelation 2 and 3 shows us, through every period of church history, the trumpet has sounded has sounded, calling the children of God to prepare to fight the good fight, and to conquer. May the Lord grant us the privilege of being among those blessed individuals! |
